Hello, dreamers. Once again I’m a day late with this post, but after a stressful week I decided to take the night off to spend time with friends. Now, refreshed, it’s time to get back to work.
That work, however, will be somewhat limited in regards to my work-in-progress. Over the coming week, I’ll be stepping back a bit. This was planned, however, and with that said, here’s the latest on my current work-in-progress:
Dawn of the Pioneers
Hard to believe as it is, on Tuesday night I completed Phase 1 of Dawn of the Pioneers. I had originally planned to include one final chapter, but the more I looked at things structurally, I realized this chapter was the way to end things. After several chapters of fast-paced action, this one featured more character building, important conversations and revelations. And it all ended with Holmes and Ford taking one last trip into the desert to view one of their planet’s greatest natural marvels. It was perfect.
Now, as usual, I plan to take a break. For the next week I’ll be stepping back, giving me a chance to focus on my query letter and synopsis for The pioneers, and perhaps check in on some other projects (this website, for example). Then, the week after next, I’ll resume work with a week of revisions on Phase 1 and research for Phase 2.
I have my concerns about Phase 1, though I find myself less concerned than I did after each phase of The Pioneers. Once again I find myself thinking this was all too easy; it all fell together too perfectly, flowed too well. Luckily, I have my experience with The Pioneers to fall back on, which suggests that maybe, just maybe, everything went so well because I actually had a clear idea of where I was going, and knew what to do. To be fair, I do still have some minor concerns regarding the flow of the plot, and certain elements I may wish to expand. But those concerns will be addressed, in a week’s time.
Of perhaps greater concern is the coming phase of the story. Phase 2 will be unlike anything I’ve done before: the characters will be moving around, visiting new planets. All the while, the coming chapters will be interspersed with non-sequitur chapters that provide the reader with their first true glimpse of what’s happening on Earth. I still have a lot of concerns to address. I’m still a little worried. But more than anything I’m excited.
There’s still a lot to do, but I’m pleased with how far I’ve come already. For now, keep reading, and dare to dream. – MK
